The John Day Fossil Beds, Part 3: Sheep Rock
I visited the Sheep Rock Unit last, spending an entire day there. While this area has rock formations no less stunning than the other two units, the stars here really are the fossils. The paleontology center contains world-class exhibits that comprehensively detail the fossil records in the park, thoroughly explaining the evolution of the animals in response to the dramatic climate change and the adaptations of their predators. The stratified hills here show tens of millions of years, allowing visitors to understand all the geologic forces that shaped the landscape.
