Antelope Canyon: A Dream Come True
Antelope Canyon was the second place of five that I’ve visited from my must-see list. It was love at first sight. See, I wasn’t aware that it even existed until I read this post from this awesome travel blog I read. I immediately knew I had to go there. For those of you who are not familiar it, Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon famous for its smooth, flowing erosion patterns. It is absolutely stunning. Gorgeous. Exquisite. Amazing.
I started in Upper Antelope Canyon, which is the more popular of the two. At about half the length of the lower canyon, the upper canyon is deeper and characterized by narrower openings at the top which restrict much of the light. It also has sun beams that pierce the canyon at midday. My camera was not up to the task in such low light but I still managed to get some nice photos though they don’t reflect the warmth of the rock. Believe me though, this place is infinitely more beautiful in person.
I have more photos of Lower Antelope because I was able to get better photos due to lighting, not because I preferred it. The lower canyon, also referred to as “The Corkscrew,” is known for a broader range of tones including blues.
Does Antelope Canyon require a permit for this hike? Instead of Bryce, we could go right through Page on our way South, but from what I found they require permits…or is that just for “The Wave” ?
Oh, I see you already looked into Page! No permits required for antelope but you have to go with a navajo guide. They offer tours ever half hour, just show up. There are some other slot canyons in the Page area that require permits or guides but nothing else in Grand Staircase-Escalante Natl Mon needs a permit as far as I know except The Wave. And those are issued day -of in Kanab, UT. Or day before, I forget which.
I’ve got the reservation for Antelope Canyon, just in case it’s busy. I am more of an off the beaten path type though, like you I imagine, just finding trails and going 😉 I’m writing down the places you tell me about to take with me! It will be like a treasure hunt! Haha…I hope you are having a great time out there, love that you do work for HFH, you are awesome!
Always good to have options while you’re traveling! 🙂 And thank you, I’m enjoying working with the awesome people here at HFH.
