Fort Pierce, Florida
After leaving the Keys I decided to go back north to Fort Pierce where I had looked into volunteering a few weeks back. The Harvest Food & Outreach Centers provide reduced-cost food, thrift centers, as well as education, employment, and government assistance services for needy families in central Florida. I filled out a short application to volunteer for a few days with this fantastic organization and was assigned to sort incoming donations and do general cleaning working in the thrift store with Deb. It was a wonderful experience and if I am ever travelling back that way I would absolutely do it again.
In the evenings I wandered around the beaches a bit as well and even managed to see a baby manatee surface for air not even ten feet from me. I wasn’t quick enough to catch the baby or the mother on camera but I did get a few pictures of sunset at the South Causeway Park where I spotted them.
What a cool thing… volunteerism and tourism! 🙂
It’s been great, Joe. I’m in my first week of a Habitat for Humanity build now and it’s been a wonderful experience. Next I go to Tennessee to volunteer working on a farm that supplies food for the food bank there. I’m very excited!
