Seals! A Walk on the Brier Island Coastal Trail Past Grand Passage Lightstation
After my whale watching excursion I headed a couple miles out to the Grand Passage Lightstation on the northern side of the island. I had planned on hiking this stretch of the Coastal Trail, which encircles Brier Island, but on recommendation of some of the guides on the whale watch I decided to go directly after our return to land in order to catch low tide because I was told there would be seals! And seals there were. I hadn’t even walked a half mile past the lighthouse when I started hearing all the commotion, long before they came into view. There turned out to be about fifty. I could see them quite well on the exposed rocks just offshore but the beach uncovered by the outgoing tide was so covered in slick sea weed, dulse, and kelp that getting closer proved very difficult.

Love all these posts. I would really love to get up that way and do some long walks on the coast.
Thank you again, John, I can’t recommend the Nova Scotia coast highly enough. It was an incredibly spectacular place.
Beautiful! I love how they hold their tails up and look like they are planking. What a core workout!
Yes! They appeared as though they were showing off for me! It was seriously amazing to be so close.
They are so beautiful! And what a gorgeous day too! Absolutely lovely photos, Meghan!
Thanks, Liz! The seals were completely amazing just hanging out so close to shore. Brier Island was a dream come true.
