Cedar Pocket, Virgin River Canyon Recreation Area, Arizona, Part 1: Wading Through the Virgin River
The Cedar Pocket section of the Virgin River Canyon contains a small day-use area and campground situated on the rim of the canyon overlooking the river. There are no trails in the canyon but as public land it can be explored at your whim and I noticed more than a few trailers parked with 4-wheelers. Although I arrived late in the afternoon I walked down the canyon rim from camp and spent an hour or so before dinner alternately wading through the water and walking along the shore. This portion of the gorge features fantastic red sandstone cliffs and washes that run down from the mountains behind. The river itself is beautiful and clear, but it’s the canyon itself that is the standout here.
