Silver Rim Trail, Dixie National Forest
Since Tom had brought me to the Pine Mountains section of Dixie National Forest to see the charcoal kiln the previous week I was itching to go back to get a better view of the red sandstone reefs and the mountains. I drove down the forest road and stopped at the first trailhead, which turned out to be for the Silver Rim Trail, and started off up the mountain. Located close to the Red Cliffs, the trail offers spectacular views of the uplifted and tilted sandstone before it turns away towards multiple canyons and the mountains. At some point in the afternoon I ended up off the trail and wandered up a few washes, climbed through some narrows, navigated some dry falls and pour overs, and hiked across some sandstone. It was an adventure. Because I was off trail by myself in a wilderness area I turned around after a few hours and headed back towards the trailhead before finishing my exploration but I hope to return and finish the actual trail.
