Curecanti National Recreation Area, Colorado
The Curecanti Creek Trail was a true delight. When Rachel and I had passed through the Recreation Area in 2013 we stopped at Pioneer Point Overlook where the trail begins so I had known it was gong to be a fantastic hike but I didn’t expect it to be so lovely for the entire walk. It was seriously gorgeous. The 4 mile (one-way) trail descends 900 feet following the creek as it falls into the dammed Gunnison River, providing views of the creek rapids and waterfalls from the lush forested banks. The force of the water rushing down the canyon is a sight to behold, and it’s incredibly picturesque to boot. Nearing the mouth of the creek the canyon opens providing phenomenal perspective to the rim towering above and an up-close perspective of the blue-green waters. Tom and I both enjoyed the hike immensely and appreciated how different it was coming from arid Utah but it would truthfully have been just as wonderful any other time.
