Greenfield Village, Michigan
Greenfield Village is a collection of over a hundred relocated buildings and thousands of pieces of historical machinery that are meant to recreate the ways in which Americans have lived and worked since the inception of the country. Over 90 acres on the property are filled with actual and reconstructed buildings staffed by historical interpreters who demonstrate crafts, trades, machinery, and ways of domestic life. Activities as varied as milking cows, weaving on early 19th century looms, repairing hundred year old locomotives, and blowing glass are performed to educate visitors and illustrate the progress of technology that made the industrial age possible.
One of the highlights of Greenfield Village is the relocated laboratory complex of Thomas Edison from Menlo Park, New Jersey in which he invented the phonograph and the (commercially viable) incandescent bulb. My favorite sections however were the relocated 1880’s Firestone Farm, the early 20th century locomotive roundhouse, the colonial Connecticut Daggett Farmhouse and Cape Cod Farris windmill built in 1633, the 19th century Armingston & Sims machine shop, and the craft village which included demonstrations of multiple types of 19th century weaving looms, glass blowing, and print making, among other things. Staffed with the incredibly knowledgeable interpreters, the entire village truly brings history to life and is something I enjoyed immensely.
