Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Part 2: The Lakeshore Trail
After seeing many of the islands from the water we were eager to see some of the mainland shoreline, in particular the sea caves. We started at Meyers Beach and took the Lakeshore Trail through boggy, lowland forest which climbed gradually until we reached a predominately coniferous zone that was drier and more open. Here we left the trail to walk closer to the lake, getting glimpses of cliffs, blue shimmering water, and sea caves along the way. Reaching a vertical crack we retreated inland a bit and crossed near a natural rock bridge – an arch that spanned the fracture. We then wandered past the ravine weaving in between trees near the cliff edges to catch sight of the fantastic erosion of the rock below.

This place just takes my breath away. It’s almost as if I can fill my lungs with the fresh air and completely relax in the wild peace of it all. Amazing!

It was incredible peaceful and still and beautiful, Liz. It was definitely one of those forests that fill your lungs with good, clean piney air.

Looks amazing! We only saw Apostle Islands from the water. Would like to go back and actually camp there.
I know there’s great backcountry camping on the islands, Olelsandra. It’s a beautiful place!
